Salaam and warmest greetings, everyone, and thank you for visiting the Medico-legal Society of Malaysia (MLSM) website.
I am honoured to lead this Society as it has crossed three and a half decades since it was incorporated. First and foremost I would like to convey my heartfelt appreciation and the society’s gratitude and thanks to Ms. Shanti Abraham, the immediate Past President, for her strong and steady leadership of the MLSM through a challenging time during her tenure as President. Much effort and dedication has been put in by her and the members of the executive committee and sub-committees, that saw the society focus on promoting the enactment of a Mental Capacity Act (MCA) and the rights of the vulnerable. Kudos!
The MLSM serves as a professional organization that plays a significant role in bridging the gap between the fields of medicine, the law and medical ethics in Malaysia. With a focus on the complex intersection of healthcare practices, legal regulations and ethical considerations, MLSM fulfills various functions and roles that are essential for the advancement of the medicolegal sector in the country. It is a vital platform for engagement of the medical and legal professions on issues of common interest.
One of the primary functions of the MLSM is to promote education and awareness among its members and the wider community. Through seminars, workshops and conferences, MLSM ensures that healthcare professionals, legal practitioners and other stakeholders are well-informed about current issues, ethical considerations, legal requirements and best practices in the medicolegal realm. By enhancing knowledge and understanding, the society helps to improve standards of care and legal compliance within the healthcare industry.
The society provides a platform for professionals from diverse backgrounds to connect, exchange ideas, and collaborate on medicolegal and medico-social issues. By fostering relationships between individuals in the medical, legal, social and ethical fields, MLSM encourages and facilitates interdisciplinary dialogue and cooperation, which in turn leads to innovative solutions and advancements in medicolegal practices. This was the key milestone of the MLSM Regional Conference in 2023, where the Mental Capacity Act became the main topic of discussion. While the United Kingdom enacted their Mental Capacity Act in 2005 and Singapore implemented a similar Act about 10 years ago, Malaysia currently does not yet have such a legislation. As Malaysia is expected to be an aging nation and with an increasing elderly population, the time is now for us to have a safety net to take care of the health, wealth and well-being of the elderly and the vulnerable.
The society encourages research studies, collects data and publishes findings on various medicolegal topics to contribute to the body of knowledge in the field. It has become part of MLSM to incorporate research presentations at our AGM with prizes awarded to the best poster and oral presentations. We have been encouraged to see that a wide spectrum of topics in medicolegal and medico-ethics issues are often explored through these presentations. I hope to see greater growth in this area from Malaysian talent and look forward to more researchers joining MLSM.
MLSM frequently receives invitations to collaborate in organizing seminars such as Expert Witness training- most recently with the Malaysian Society of Anaesthetists, Society of Intensive Care and the College of Anaesthetists as well as the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Society of Malaysia. It is no surprise that these two medical specialties seem to be the most affected by medico-legal litigation claims, hence knowledge and understanding of the legal processes and issues related to expert witness testimony is essential and crucial.
It is my sincere hope that more healthcare professionals and legal practitioners start to take interest in the current rising medicolegal climate and work together to find solutions and alternatives to reduce the numbers and costs in this country. I welcome an increased awareness among both professions on medicolegal issues and look forward to more interaction.
Thank You.
